Tissue Mast Cells in Gastro-intestinal Tract of Albino-rats with experimental Intestinal Obstruction
Kim Young-Eon

Abstract
he tissue mast cells in the stomach, duodenum, small and large intestine of albino-rats under experimental intestinal obstruction by means of simple ligation, loop ligation and torsion of small intestine, ileo-cecal intussusception. and mesenteric artery ligation, were observed. Healthy male albino-rats weighing from 100 to 120 grams were used. The following results were obtained.
1. In albino-rats after simple ligation of small intestine, tissue mast cells in proximal part from ligation site began to decrease in number in 30 minutes, reaching minimum in 6 hours. The numbers of tissue mast cells showed gradual restoration and almost normal within 24 hours. The tissue mast cells in distal part from ligation showed similar but less marked decrease in number.
2. The tissue mast cells in the proximal digestive tract of albino-rats after loop ligation revealed more marked decrease in number as compared to simple ligation, and reached its minimum in 6 hours after operation. The distal part showed similar decrease although less marked in degree.
3. The tissue mast cells in stomach, duodenum and small intestine after axis torsion of small intestine showed maximal decrease at 6 hours and gradually restored. However. in large intestine the tissue mast cells showed decrease within 3 hours and gradually restored thereafter.
4. The tissue mast cells in proximal part after ileocecal intussusception revealed more gradual decrease in number as compared to axis torsion and reached maximal decrease at 6 hours and gradually restored. Distal part revealed decrease in number in 3hours and restored.
5. The tissue mast cells in proximal part after mesenteric artery ligation showed marked decrease in number and reached the minimum in 3 to 6 hours with gradual restoration thereafter. The distal part showed similar but less marked decrease.
6. The number of tissue mast cells showed gradual decrease as time passed after operation and reached the minimum in 3 to 6 hours. And thereater, they gradually restored to normal level. This was modified slightly by various methods of intestinal obstruction. Distal part of the intestine revealed slight but similar decrease, to proximal part.
7. When the numbers of tissue mast cells in the gastrointestinal tract were decreasing in albino-rats under intestinal obstruction, percentage of normal type of tissue mast cells was decreased, while percentage of diffuse type was increased. On the other hand, when the numbers of tissue mast cells were restored and increased, the percentage of the formers increased and that of the latters decreased.
8. Summarizing the experimental results stated above, in albino-rats under various types of intestinal obstruction it was assumed that the numerical and morphological changes of tissue mast cells in the dige-
stive tract were related to intestinal obstruction, and the numerical decrease was more severe when ligation was stronger. And it was also assumed that the numerical and morphological changes of tissue mast cells in the gastrointestinal tract appeared to be in certain relationship with various lesions and signs in experimental intestinal obstruction.
